HATTON EYES FLOYD REMATCH

Hatton was well beaten by Mayweather in 10 rounds in December

Ricky Hatton is reportedly eyeing a rematch with world welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather at Wembley Stadium.

Hatton's promotional team is thought to have approached Mayweather's Golden Boy Promotions about a potential rematch at Wembley, with Mayweather's representatives also thought to be keen on a rematch, thought to be worth up to 50m.

Hatton lost to Mayweather after 10 rounds in Las Vegas last December although the Manchester boxer believes that referee Joe Cortez contributed to his first and only defeat in 44 professional bouts and is keen to test himself again.

"I thought the referee was a little bit harsh, the warnings were only coming one way and I lost my cool a little bit," said the 29-year-old.

"But I don't want to be an old man sat with my pipe and slippers in years to come and be blaming it on the referee.

"So I'd like to have another crack at him with a referee on better form and then if Floyd was to beat me again I could say, 'now you know'."

Richard Schaefer, head of Golden Boy promotions, was also optimistic about a possible rematch, saying: "It's very likely that Floyd will come over next spring. Floyd and his manager Al Hayman are very serious about it."

Schaefer added: "While Floyd would have to get past Oscar first, he knows that Ricky has talked about the referee.

"He wants to show that he will repeat what happened the first time and fighting in front of 100,000 fans would be huge motivation for Floyd."

Hatton, an avid Manchester City supporter, would first have to come through his upcoming sold-out bout with Juan Lazcano at the City of Manchester Stadium on May 24 before a possible clash with IBF light-welterweight champion Paul Malignaggi at New York's Madison Square Garden in the autumn.

The Manchester boxer meanwhile has also stoked up the rivalry between him and Bradford's Junior Whitter, claiming "If Junior Witter was fighting in my backyard, I'd shut the curtains," ruling out what would be a highly anticipated "roses" clash with the WBC light-welterweight champion.
