BRITISH GRAND PRIX

World Champion Sebastian Vettel’s lead at the summit of the 2011 standings already looks unassailable

Just eight races into the season and reigning F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel’s lead at the summit of the 2011 standings already looks unassailable. His Drivers Championship index spread is set at 56-58 by spread betting firm Sporting Index, where 60 points are awarded to the winner. However, ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, spread sellers will be wondering whether the ban on off-throttle diffusers, to be implemented by the start of this race weekend, really will affect the Red Bulls more than the other teams as has been suggested.

This race represents a milestone for the Northamptonshire circuit as it will be the 25th consecutive year of a British GP at Silverstone. British McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, with season points spreads respectively set at 245-253 and 222-228 on Sporting Index, will hope to give the home crowd something to shout about on this landmark occasion. Force India rookie Paul di Resta completes the trio of Brits and buyers of his race index spread will have plenty to celebrate if he can get on the podium.

Since 1987, the year that Nigel Mansell won the second of his four British Grand Prix with Williams, the British constructors have fared better than their foreign rivals. They are a shadow of the team they once were, but Williams’ record of seven wins here in that time may well persuade some spread bettors to buy the race index of seasoned campaigner Rubens Barrichello, who won in 2003. Spread sellers should note that in the past three years he has finished fifth, third and third. McLaren also have seven wins since 1987, last taking the chequered flag in 2008, courtesy of Hamilton. Team Red Bull have dominated since, with one victory each in the last two renewals for Vettel (2009) and Webber (2010). Spread buyers of either driver’s race index spread will hope for a third success in as many years.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out why Vettel should start as spread favourite for the race and they may also want to consider buying or selling his spread markets concerning the qualifying sessions. He has started on pole position seven out of eight times this season and given the difficulty of overtaking on the Silverstone track, spread buyers of his qualifying index will expect the German to give it a big push in the qualifying shootout.

Sporting Index offer a number of season-long Formula One specials and those who think the Ferraris will again struggle - they finished in 14th and 15th place at the British GP last season - might consider buying the supremacy between Vettel’s and Fernando Alonso’s total points for the season. The gap is currently 99 points and the spread market can be bought at 157.
