GREG: MURRAY CAN BE NO1
Andy Murray has the ability to become the best tennis player in the world, according to former British number one Greg Rusedski.
The former US Open finalist and Wimbledon quarter finalist has singled out Scotland's Andy Murray, who beat Stanislas Wawrinka in the Qatar Open final on Saturday, as someone who can break the dominance of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at the top of the world rankings.
The 20-year-old Murray, who burst onto the scene at Wimbledon in 2005, is currently ranked ninth in the world but Rusedski believes that the official rankings don't tell the full story.
Rusedski told BBC Radio Five Live: "He is playing the best tennis of his career and, to my mind, right now he is the third best player in the world.
"If he continues as he is, he can be the number one and win a major in the next few years.
"Only they [Federer and Nadal] are above him at the moment."
Murray had a difficult 2007 as injuries prevented his participation at both Wimbledon and the French Open whilst Murray also split with coach Brad Gilbert in favour of a team of coaches consisting of Miles Maclagan and Louis Cayer.
Murray prepared for the Australian Open, the first major of the year and his first under the new coaching structure with a confidence boosting victory in Doha to win the Qatar Open, his fourth ATP career victory.
Murray completed a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory over his Swiss opponent and despite a nervy opening, looked sharp in the final set.
Murray is seeded 11th in the Australian Open, which starts on Monday.
