US Open Tennis Preview

Tennis spread bettors can expect the 2010 US Open to be one of the most competitive Grand Slams in recent memory. By this time of year, spread punters will be aware that the arduous tennis season has started to take its toll on the stars meaning there could be a repeat of the 2009 finals. Any spread bettor that had bought Juan Martin del Potro's outright index (100pts for winner, 70pts for runner-up, 50pts for losing semi-finalist etc.) last year will have made a healthy profit after the Argentine beat Roger Federer in the final. Buyers of Federer's win index spread this year will have noted that the Swiss has an impressive record at Flushing Meadows. Having won the Cincinnati Masters last week, his spread supporters will hope his victory over Mardy Fish means he is in the right form to regain the US Open after his run of five successive titles here was ended last year.
Those that have bought Rafa Nadal's outright index spread will be hoping he can take his first US title in his illustrious career. Buyers of his spread will be aware that the Spaniard enters into the final Grand Slam of 2010 having already taken the French Open and Wimbledon titles. Spread sellers of his outright index will wish for an early exit and hope that Nadal fails in his bid to become only the seventh tennis player in history to complete a career Grand Slam.
Andy Murray recently split with his coach Miles Maclagan and has since won the Toronto Masters, which will give buyers of his outright index for the US Open plenty of confidence. On his way to winning in Toronto, the Scot beat both Nadal and Federer as well as an in-form David Nalbandian. Sellers of his spread will have noted his defeat to Mardy Fish at the quarter-final stage in Cincinnati as a sign that he may still not be ready to win his first major title. World number three Novak Djokovic has had a tough 2010 and sellers of his outright index will be pleased to hear that the Serb has only one title to his name this season.
Those that like a spread bet on the women's draw will have been surprised to hear that Serena Williams will not be able to win back her 2008 title after pulling out through injury. Without Serena in the running, spread punters will perhaps look to the likes of Kim Clijsters. Clijsters came out of retirement last year and went on to claim the 2009 US Open title and her spread supporters will be expectant to her retaining the US crown. Buyers should also be aware that with her recent win in the Cincinnati Masters, Clijsters has now won four times on tour this year.
Sporting Index also offer plenty of exciting spreads for individual matches and the tennis traders expect plenty of action on these for the finals. Buyers of the total games spread for the men's final will hope for a repeat of last year's five set, 53 game slug-a-thon, as will buyers of the match distance spread (100pts for five sets, 50pts for four sets). Buyers of Sporting Index's X-courts market will have been delighted to see the final spread make up 138, although sellers in the women's final may be more confident. The last three finals have all been settled in two sets, with an average X-courts make-up of 45.
