From 16th July the world's top golfers will compete for the 138th Open Championship at one of Scotland's most stunning yet challenging courses, the Ailsa Course, Turnberry. In preparation for another four days of major golf action, spread bettors will be researching previous Open performances and outcomes to inform their decisions on the numerous spread markets available with Sporting Index. The Open has been held at Turnberry on three previous occasions and spread punters should already be aware that in the invariably high winds driving accuracy rather than big hitting is at a premium on the par-70 course.

Punters focusing on the leaderboard index spreads will not be surprised to see Tiger Woods' name at the top of the list. Buyers of his spread will remember that Tiger Woods has an excellent record in the Open, having won the Championship three times, and he arrives in fine form with his recent victory in the AT&T tournament in Maryland. While some would say Tiger has no flaw in his game, critical observers would point to a relative weakness in his driving, and spread buyers of his finishing position may conclude he is not best suited to this dramatic course.

Padraig Harrington, winner at Carnoustie in 2007 and Royal Birkdale last year, is also attracting a lot of attention on his spread markets. The Irish favourite is hoping to win a third consecutive Open title but sellers of his leaderboard index spread will know that no player has achieved such a feat since Peter Thomson in 1956. Sellers of Harrington's finishing position will of course hope he can rediscover some form just in time for the major and will take encouragement from the circumstances of last year's success when he managed to win despite missing the warm-up rounds with a wrist injury.

Sporting Index also offer several special spread markets including the winning total score. The winning totals over four rounds at Turnberry Opens previously have been 268, 280 and 268 with an average of 272. Spread buyers will have noted the changes to the course - it is now 247 yards longer at 7204 yards and will have 23 more bunkers than last the last time the Open was hosted here in 1994. Both buyers and sellers of the spread may be interested to know that previous winning scores at the Open in the last five years have been 283, 277, 270, 274 and 274 - an average of 276. With conditions likely to have a significant bearing on scorecards and spread markets, plenty of opportunities are likely to open themselves up to in-play spread punters. Visitors to Turnberry Opens have witnessed nail-biting finishes in the past, particularly in 1994 and 1977, where the title was won by a single shot on both occasions.
