NFL Season Preview

Super Bowl champions, New Orleans Saints, get the new NFL season underway on 9th September as they take on the Minnesota Vikings at the Superdome.

Spread betting fans of the sport will breathe a collective sigh of relief as they prepare for the first competitive action since February's exciting climax to the 2009 season.

Gridiron is the perfect complement to spread betting, as anyone who regularly bets with Sporting Index on individual matches will tell you. The huge number of statistics recorded on every player, every play and every quarter of every match gives punters reams and reams of historical information on which to base their spread buying and selling decisions.

Last year's runners-up Indianapolis Colts and Saints are among the favourites on Sporting Index's Super Bowl XLV outright index spread - Colts are 32-36pts, behind the San Diego Chargers at 33-37pts and Saints sit just behind both on 31-35pts (100pts for winning Super Bowl, 70pts for runner-up etc.). Much will depend on the performances of Colts' and Saints' mercurial quarterbacks, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees respectively. Brees not only outshone Manning in the Super Bowl, throwing for two touchdowns but, as spread buyers of passing yards in any of New Orleans' matches in 2009 will tell you, he also topped the regular season passing rankings with 34 touchdowns and 4,388 yards. Buyers will certainly outweigh the sellers on the passing yards spreads and touchdown passes when either of these two are involved.

Saints look set for a tough time in the NFC however with both the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers hot on their heels as far as the outright spreads are concerned. Dallas head up the NFC east division with a spread of 29-32pts (50-25-10-0), while Green Bay are favourites to win the NFC North with a divisional index of 34-37pts. Buyers of any of the Packers' offensive spreads throughout the regular season will be impressed that the team top the preseason list for offensive yards, with an average of 406, and an average of 296 passing yards in their four games. Pittsburgh Steelers top the preseason rankings in rushing yards averages with 155.2 and buyers of their rushing spreads this season may well have to thank rookie running-back Jonathan Dwyer for any profits. In just two matches he has 138 yards to his name.

Defensively, the New York Jets, who have moved into their fantastic new stadium, New Meadowlands, were the most impressive in the 2009 regular season. They conceded an average 252.3 yards per game, and this may well persuade spread punters to sell yardage in their matches this season. The Jets' NY neighbours, the Giants, are expected to play second fiddle to the side whose stadium they will be sharing. Sporting Index offer the Giants' outright index spread at 17-20, while the Jets can be bought at 28.
