RYDER CUP
First contested at Wentworth in 1927, the Ryder Cup puts the best golfers that Europe has to offer against America’s finest.
The biannual event is consistently one of, if not the, most popular golf betting event in the world and thanks to the introduction of European golfers to what was previously a UK & Ireland side, we have seen a much more evenly contested competition after years of American dominance following the Second World War.
The event has not been without controversy however. Accusations of gamesmanship surrounded the tournament in 1969, the row over cheating escalated in 1991 with Seve Ballesteros’ comments that “breaking the rules and cheating are two different things” and in 1999, the US team and fans were blasted by the Europeans after they celebrated a Justin Leonard putt which eventually won the cup for the USA.
There have also been plenty of shocks, most notably in 2002 when Welsh rookie Phillip Price claimed a sensational victory over world number two Phil Mickelson in a result which stunned the golf betting world.
With two convincing wins for Europe in 2006 and 2004, will you be backing the USA to redress the balance in 2008?
