THE ONE AND ONLY
London, 11th June 2007 – Spread Betting Bookmakers Sporting Index this afternoon opened a book on how many players would finish this year’s US open at Oakmont under par and have come up with their lowest ever prediction for total sub par 72 hole scores… just one. Amazingly, the company believes it is more than likely that nobody will finish up with a minus score and spokesman Karl Suntay expects “a winner’s score of possibly +5 or +6”.
One of the reasons for such ludicrously high scoring is the sheer number and difficult nature of the course’s bunkers. “At one time there used to be as many as 350 bunkers at Oakmont”, stresses Suntay. “Even though that figure has been reduced to 210 for this year’s tournament, that is still 50 more than at Shinnecock Hills where the 2004 US Open was held”.
It’s going to be incredibly tough picking a winner and Sporting Index are currently predicting that Tiger Woods will finish 13th, Vijay Singh 25th, Ernie Els 27th and Colin Montgomerie 51st. However, one thing for certain is that for many of the golfers it will be their toughest ever test. “This course is a monster”, adds Suntay. “It’s got a 288 yard par 3 and a 500 yard par 4. It’s not for the faint hearted but will make great viewing”. It all gets underway on Thursday.
