CHALLENGE CUP WINNERS
The oldest and most renowned cup competition in Rugby League offers provides some of the most famous stories in the game, when the rugby betting formbook was thrown out of the window and when the seemingly impossible happened.
Rugby betting fans looked in shock as “poor lad” Don Fox of Wakefield saw his last minute kick from in front of the posts sail wide to hand Leeds victory in 1968.
In 1996, Bobbie Goulding single-handedly turned around a 26-12 deficit against Bradford to win a thrilling final for St Helens. Bradford’s Robbie Paul became the first player to score a Wembley hat-trick in the same game, only to see Leroy Rivett go one better two and score four tries for Leeds as they won the last ever final played under the twin towers in 1999.
And when it comes to the Challenge Cup, Rugby League betting enthusiasts have often been left astounded by unbelievable upsets. Featherstone Rovers stunned the mighty Hull in 1983, Leigh hammered Leeds in 1971 and Hull caused a modern-day surprise be beating Leeds at the Millennium Stadium.
But it was Sheffield Eagles who stunned the rugby betting world in 1998 as they took on eventual Super League champions Wigan – the shortest-priced favourites in final history. In what many regard as the greatest final ever played, the men from South Yorkshire caused the biggest shock in the competitions history with a 17-8 victory over the mighty Warriors.
With the cup final back at Wembley, look out for even more rugby league betting history being made in this illustrious competition.
