EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS FINALS
The European Championships pits the top footballing nations on the continent against each other, with 16 countries battling it out for the Henri Delaunay Trophy.
But whilst a look down the roll of honour will turn up some big names, there have been a number of occasions where the football betting markets have been turned on their head by results that came completely out of the blue.
After Yugoslavia were expelled from Euro 92 due to the political situation in the country, Denmark were invited to join the competition in Sweden. The Dames went on to stun the football betting world by seeing past the much-fancied Holland to reach the final where they would play overwhelming favourites Germany.
Goals from John Jenson and Kim Vilfort sealed a 2-0 victory for the Danes to stun football betting fans across Europe and seal their first ever European Championship.
But Denmark’s feats were to be surpassed just 12 years later in Portugal, as one of the world’s biggest ever sporting shocks unfolded.
Germany, Croatia, Italy and Spain were all eliminated from the tournament in the group stages, which in itself caused a stir in the football betting markets, as four of the fancied teams packed their bags and left early.
But it was the minnows of Greece who took the tournament by storm, seeing past both France and Czech Republic to earn a place in the final against hosts and favourites Portugal.
In a thrilling final, Portugal failed to break down the stubborn Greeks and it was a 56th minute goal from Angelos Charisteas that completed one of the biggest football betting upsets in history.
