GUINNESS PREMIERSHIP WINNERS

It was only since 1987 that English rugby union has operated a domestic league competition. Having originally feared that the introduction of leagues would lead to a rise in improper conduct and the end of amateurism, the RFU relented and introduced a league structure encompassing some 1000 clubs in 108 leagues.

Today, that has led to the Guinness Premiership as we know it today, one of the top rugby competitions in the world which attracts sell-out crowds, massive TV audiences and an array of rugby betting markets.

Until recently, we’ve seen the domination of the country’s top flight by Bath in the early 90’s, Leicester Tigers at the turn of the millennium and latterly, London Wasps. But today, the Guinness Premiership is by no means the predictable rugby bet that it may once have been, with the Guinness Premiership Final providing the rugby betting market’s flagship event.

In the past five finals, only once has the league winner gone on to win the Premiership title. Whether you agree with that policy or not, and most living around Kingsholm in Gloucester probably won’t, there’s no denying that it adds drama to the rugby betting calendar.
