Five-time Investec Derby winning trainer Aidan O’Brien looked to be without a leading contender for Flat racing’s premier Classic, but a recent smattering of market support has installed his colt, Giovanni Canaletto, as fourth favourite for Saturday’s Investec Derby (4.30pm Epsom Downs). The history books are against the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt however. Having yet won in Group company, he’s failed to fulfil a respected trend set by 12 of the last 13 Derby winners. Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the Oaks on four occasions, most recently with Was in 2012. On that day three years ago, O’Brien’s victorious filly was regarded as the yard’s second string for the fillies’ Classic and expected to do nothing more than make the pace for her fancied stablemate and market leader Maybe.

On Friday, Diamondsandrubies could spring another surprise by overturning her market favoured stablemate Together Forever. Partnered with 2012 Oaks-winning jockey Seamie Heffernan, a positive ride can be expected and she will no doubt have the stamina to see out the trip. Her win in the Cheshire Oaks last month gave assurance that the filly has the speed, balance and agility as well as stamina in her make-up to have every success on Epsom Downs. Her main rival is the David Wachman-trained Legatissimo. The filly has been popular in the Oaks market since staying on resolutely to win the 1,000 Guineas last month. The draw is worth a mention as it has proved somewhat significant over the years at Epsom. No Derby or Oaks winner has won from stall No.1 this century.
